95% of Local Businesses Are Invisible to AI Search. Is Yours?

April 3, 2026 · Teehoo Martech · 6 min read

We scanned 6,403 local businesses across 6 industries in the Los Angeles metro area. The results are stark.

95%
of local businesses are invisible when someone asks AI "best plumber near me"

When a customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for a local service recommendation, the AI recommends the same 5% of businesses over and over. Everyone else doesn't exist.

Here's what our data shows — and what local businesses can do about it.

The Data: 6,403 Businesses, 6 Industries, 78 Cities

We used our Local Scanner to scan every business in 6 industries across the Greater Los Angeles area:

The Most Shocking Finding

We found businesses with thousands of 5-star reviews that AI doesn't recommend. Here are real examples:

BusinessGoogle ReviewsRatingChatGPT Recommends?
All City Plumbing7,9254.9No
Service Champions HVAC7,3514.9No
Brody Pennell HVAC4,7354.9No
R & R Plumbing4,5105.0No

53,000+ five-star reviews combined. ChatGPT recommends: 0 out of 10.

Having great reviews is necessary but not sufficient. AI doesn't read Google reviews the way humans do — it needs structured data, content, and cross-platform signals to understand your business.

Why AI Can't Find These Businesses

We analyzed the common factors among the 95% that are invisible:

1. No Structured Data (95%+)

Almost no local businesses have LocalBusiness Schema markup on their website. Without it, AI has to guess what your business does. With it, AI knows exactly: your name, address, phone, services, hours, and ratings — in a format it can parse instantly.

2. Incomplete Google Business Profile (90%+)

Most businesses set up their GBP years ago and never touched it again. Missing: Q&A section, regular Google Posts, complete attributes, adequate photos. AI considers GBP activity a signal of legitimacy.

3. No FAQ Content (98%+)

AI heavily cites FAQ content — research shows it's one of the strongest citation signals. Yet virtually no local business website has a FAQ section, let alone FAQ Schema markup.

4. Weak Directory Presence

Being on Yelp alone isn't enough. AI looks for cross-platform consistency. Businesses visible on 4+ platforms (Yelp, HomeAdvisor, BBB, industry-specific directories) are 2.8x more likely to be cited by AI.

5. No Recent Activity

AI favors businesses that show signs of life: recent reviews, recent posts, updated content. A website last updated in 2023 looks abandoned.

What the Top 5% Do Differently

The businesses that AI does recommend share these traits:

None of these are expensive. Most can be done in a weekend.

The Opportunity

Here's the silver lining: because 95% of local businesses are invisible to AI, the first mover advantage is enormous.

If you're a plumber in Pasadena and none of your competitors have Schema markup, FAQ content, or active Google Posts — you can leapfrog all of them by spending a few hours on these basics.

In our data, the weakest markets (where the opportunity is biggest):

Baldwin Park20/100PlumberExtreme

In these markets, one business doing the basics could own AI recommendations for the entire city.

FAQ

Why are local businesses invisible to AI search?
Most local businesses lack the structured data (Schema.org markup, FAQ Schema, llms.txt) that AI needs to understand and recommend them. They also tend to have incomplete Google Business Profiles, few recent reviews, and no presence on industry directories.
What is a Local AEO Score?
A Local AEO Score is a 0-100 rating that measures a local business's visibility across both traditional search (Google Local Pack) and AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini). It combines 7 dimensions: Local Pack ranking, AI visibility, GBP completeness, review strength, website quality, citation health, and competitive index.
How can a local business improve its AI visibility?
Start with: 1) Complete your Google Business Profile, 2) Add LocalBusiness Schema to your website, 3) Build citations on industry directories, 4) Get more recent Google reviews, 5) Create FAQ content that answers common customer questions.
