What Happened
In May 2025, Google rolled out AI Overviews globally — AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. The idea: answer the user's question directly so they don't have to click.
It worked. For Google. Not for everyone else.
- Organic click-through rates dropped 61% on queries where AI Overviews appear
- Small publishers lost 60% of their Google referral traffic
- Only 8% of users click through after reading the AI summary
- US organic search traffic declined 2.5% overall — the first YoY decline ever recorded
Google is cannibalizing its own organic results. They'd rather answer the question themselves than send you the traffic.
Where the Traffic Is Going
1. Google's Own AI Overviews
Google keeps users on its page by answering queries directly. Your content gets scraped, summarized, and displayed — but the user never visits your website. You provide the knowledge; Google gets the engagement.
2. ChatGPT and AI Assistants
ChatGPT now has 300+ million weekly active users. When someone asks "what's the best CRM for small business?" they increasingly ask ChatGPT instead of Googling it. And ChatGPT's answer — a direct recommendation with reasoning — is more actionable than 10 blue links.
3. Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini
Perplexity does real-time web search and cites sources. Claude handles deep analysis. Gemini integrates with Google's ecosystem. Each has millions of users, and each recommends a completely different set of businesses for the same query.
4. AI-Powered Shopping
When someone asks "best wireless earbuds under $100," AI doesn't show them ads — it gives a recommendation. AI search converts at 14.4% versus Google's 2.5%. The user trusts the recommendation and acts immediately.
The Uncomfortable Truth for Businesses
If you've spent years building SEO, this is hard to hear:
- Your #1 Google ranking is worth less than it was last year
- Your content is being summarized by AI and shown to users who never visit your site
- Your competitors who AI recommends are getting the clicks you used to get
- Only 12% of AI-cited URLs overlap with Google's top 10 — so your SEO success doesn't automatically mean AI success
This doesn't mean SEO is dead. It means SEO alone is no longer enough.
The New Reality: SEO + AEO
| SEO (Traditional) | AEO (AI Search) |
| Market size | $92B (mature) | $886M → $7.3B by 2031 |
| Growth | Declining | 34-50% CAGR |
| Conversion rate | 2.5% | 14.4% |
| Competition | Extreme | Almost none |
| What matters | Backlinks, keywords, page speed | Schema, FAQ, reviews, cross-platform |
The businesses that will thrive are the ones that maintain their SEO foundation while building AI visibility. Think of AEO as a second front — where competition is nearly zero and conversion rates are 6x higher.
What Happens If You Do Nothing
In 2024, 16% of brands were tracking AI search visibility. That means 84% are doing nothing — yet.
But the window is closing. As more businesses discover AEO, the early mover advantage shrinks. Right now:
- 95% of local businesses have zero AI visibility
- Most industries have no one actively optimizing for AI
- The first business to add Schema, FAQ, and AI-citable content in any local market will likely dominate AI recommendations for that market
A year from now, you'll wish you started today. The businesses doing AEO now will have 12 months of content, reviews, and structured data that newcomers can't catch up to overnight.
3 Things to Do This Week
- Check your AI visibility — Run a free scan to see if AI recommends your brand. If your score is below 30, you're invisible.
- Audit your AI readiness — Run a GEO Audit on your website. It checks 13 factors in 10 seconds and tells you exactly what to fix.
- Do the basics — Add Schema markup, create FAQ content, make sure AI crawlers aren't blocked. We did it in 30 minutes.
FAQ
Is Google organic traffic really declining?
Yes. US organic search traffic dropped 2.5% year-over-year in 2025, the first decline in Google's history. AI Overviews reduced organic click-through rates by 61%, and only 8% of users click through after seeing an AI-generated summary.
Where is search traffic going?
Traffic is shifting to AI search platforms: ChatGPT (300M+ weekly users), Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. It's also being absorbed by Google's own AI Overviews, which answer queries directly without users clicking through to websites.
What should businesses do about declining Google traffic?
Maintain your SEO foundation but invest in AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). Add Schema.org markup, create FAQ content with Schema, ensure AI crawlers can access your site, and build cross-platform presence so AI platforms can find and recommend you.
